House Out of Level

Q: " At what point is a house too out of level?"

Q:

At what point is a house too out of level? I have an 1870 two-story
farm house in need of a lift. A lift of four inches would be necessary
to bring the house back to level at two corners; the others are only out
two inches over 26 feet span from center to corners.

Tom Silva replies: At what point is a house too out of level? That depends on the rest of the structure. When I bought my house 26 years ago, it was six inches down in the middle, so two to four inches doesn't sound that bad. You can lift it if you want, but keep in mind that it doesn't have to be dead-on level; it is, after all, an old house.
