Turning sunroom into front porch

Has anyone ever attempted converting a front sunroom into a front porch (i.e., opening it up)? Can it be done? Is it costly? Not recommended?

Thanks!

Not sure what your window configuration looks like but you need to be concerned about support for the roof, first and foremost. If you have windows now, you'll have a header already in place that will support things above it. That's if it is a full wall of windows.

Otherwise, the header will be small and only cover the space of the window. I'd suggest tearing the inside wall covering off and see what you have. If you want a totally open porch, you'll have to support the roof with headers, columns, etc. Take a look at what you have, first.

Good Luck.

Good advice, open up the walls to expose the structure. For front porch Ideas, have a look here for front porch ideas

Thanks for your helpful advice. Assuming that the roof support checks out (we have a full wall of windows), is this a terribly involved and/or expensive project?

I guess that depends on your idea of terrible... It's not a beginners project. You'll need to support the roof load temporarily, while you remove your windows and walls. once you decinde what look you going for, you will install you permanent header & supports (columns?) and then remove the temporary supports. Then, you'll want to trim and finish all the exposed surfaces. Get a local consultation... could run up some expense.

You will need plans and a permit.
