I have several doors in my house that the hinges squeak when closing or opening the door. I ave used WD40 lubricant but that seem to get the area around the door hinge black. What do you suggest other that buying new hinges?
WAX or SOAP
Take the hinge pin off.
Rub the pin and hinge with wax or soap.
Any suitable candle wax or soap. It is time consuming job but it is heckuva better than WD40 oil. 2¢
WD isn't a very good lubricant, you'd be better of with a couple drops of 3-in-1 oil or sewing machine oil. The oil can be applied in two ways, just one drop at the edge of the pin head and each joint of the hinge, work door several times to allow oil to penetrate, then wipe the excess oil off the all surfaces with a paper towel. The other way is topop the pin up 1/2" or so, then apply one drop around the pin at the hinge plates as well as each joint. Again, work door a few times to allow the oil to penetrate to where it's needed. Tap hinge pin back into place and wipe down the excess. The key to lubricating the door is to use small amounts of oil so that you don't have a lot of excess to clean up or that will continue to ooze out after you've finished.
