My house was built in the early 50's and I have a recessed front porch with a floor of flagstones set in mortar edged with bricks that is one step up from ground level. The mortar is breaking up, the flagstones are coming loose and the bricks are falling off the porch and revealing the real problem. It appears that the flagstones are set on a shallow concrete footing of 1-3 inches, the remainder of the footing looks to be 6 inches or so of packed dirt. The problem is further compounded by 2 posts that are set on top of the flagstone. My fear is that these posts do not have sufficient support creating a structural problem. I think there may be a drainage issue causing the whole mess to get slowly washed out and making the front edge sag and now its just plain falling apart. How do I repair this problem with out causing more damage? Please Help!!
