Recently purchased older home with an area in the LR with vaulted ceiling with rafter beams stained dark. Son in law feels the 1" foam and drywall are not enough insulation (NJ)and wants to correct and still not lose the beam look. I suggested another layer of 1-2" foam and a layer of drywall. If this detracts the size of the beams, faux "C" beams could be added over the top of the existing beams, beefing them up visually. Ceiling has no leaks, staining, etc. Too much weight to add?? Saw in one post that 3/4 in plywood would be better to start. Assume by age of home this is not what is probably there. Comments?
