Toilet gurgles and then backs up

Recently our toilet started to occasionally gurgle and when we try to flush it afterwards, it backs up and will not flush properly. Sometimes it will flush fine for a couple of days, then it will gurgle a couple of days in a row and then it won't flush right. The problem seems to be worse in the afternoon. Also, we are connected to a public sewer system. Don't know if that could have any affect or not. We have plunged and snaked the toilet and still have this problem. Any ideas?

Does it gurgle without your having flushed it?

Sounds kind of like a vent pipe issue.

Yes, the other night it started to gurgle while I was in the shower. It continued for several minutes. Sometimes when it gurgles, the water level in the bowl goes up. This time it didn't, the water level stayed the same, after the gurgling stopped.

How cold is it outside? Sounds like a frozen plumbing stack vent or auxilary vent.

Otherwise see if you can rock/twist the toilet might be faulty seating on the wax seal and/or flange or cracked the toilet up near the crown of the integral syphon trap. The problem with using a plunger on a toilet to clear a clog is that you can blow out the wax seal. You should use a specialized closet snake not a sink drain snake otherwise you can break or crack the toilet.

Have you noticed any foul odors during the gurgling/burping?

There haven't been an foul smells, however, this afternoon, the toilet make the gurgling sounds and then the water level in the bowl went way down. When we tried to flush the toilet, the bowl first overfilled, and then the water level went down too low again. The water level in the tank itself, is right where it is supposed to be.

Sounds like you have a blockage that needs to be snaked.
