Installing a new drop in sink into granite top in bathroom remodel

Please help! We have a beautiful granite top on a new bathroom cabinet and we need to get our new drop in sink installed. We have a fly by night contractor that does not seem to know what the heck he is doing! What is the best way to attach the sink to the granite so that it will not leak? Thanks for your help!

Drop in sinks, aka top mount/surface mount, can be sealed in with a bead of good quality caulk. If you're using a ceramic or cast iron sink, it will be heavy enough to hold itself in place while the caulk cures. If you're using a sheet metal sink, then you will need to hold it in place with weight until the caulk cures, then the plumbing can be connected.

To prevent mold, we use only 100% silicone.

To wipe away the excess use denatured alcohol NOT paint thinner or laquer thinner.

When a sink has a recessed rim instead of a flat one (like stainless kitchen sinks) I like to make a 'dam' of a bead of silicone at the inner edge of the opening so that if the outer primary seal ever leaks water still cannot get under the countertop where it can ruin composite countertops or cabinet bottoms. IMHO there is rarely 'overkill' in keeping water at bay where it can do no harm. Water in the wrong place destroys as much as all the other problems put together, so defend against it accordingly!
