Help with identifying wall material

My sister and I are redoing an old bathroom. The house was built in 1896, and we have no idea when this bathroom was built.

Currently there is a wallpaper covering which we plan to remove, but I’d like to identify the type of wall before we do anything else. I’ve read on other forums that depending on the type of wall, it is better to just rip out the old walls and replace. Obviously we would prefer not to, but we want to do this right.

The walls are very hard, unsure of thickness.

Pic attached.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That looks like plaster. The only way to be certain is to know what you are touching and what plaster feels like. I am 99.0 percent that it is plaster. I would keep it. Our entire house has plaster walls. So much better than sheetrock, especially in wet areas. Remove all the old wallpaper and scrub it clean, fill in the cracks with plaster, sand and do what ever you like over them.
