Woodwork Finish Materials
Which clear finish is best for your interior woodwork?
What it is: A natural, alcohol-soluble resin made from lac bug secretions.
Best for: Sealing or finishing wood. Not as durable as varnish or polyurethane but easy to repair.
What it is: An oil-based blend of natural oils and a synthetic resin.
Best for: Top-coating old varnishes and newly stripped surfaces. Thinner and more flexible than a polyurethane.
What it is: Tough, man-made resins in an oil-based or a water-based vehicle.
Best for: New wood surfaces subject to abuse: floors, cabinets, tabletops. Works over varnish but not shellac.
