American Home Guard was a Pennsylvania-based company that opened in 2013 and shut its doors abruptly in 2018 after a flood of complaints and negative reviews revealed the company to be a scam. Customers who had committed to policies before American Home Guard closed were unable to successfully contact the company or receive refunds.

Choosing a home warranty company that’s trustworthy can be challenging, especially if you’ve never bought one before. To help you out, we did the work for you—we’ve reviewed a variety of home warranty companies and selected ones that offer comprehensive coverage, have affordable plans, and provide quality customer service. Liberty Home Guard is our top pick because of its extensive list of over 40 add-ons and its customer ratings, which were the highest of any home warranty provider we reviewed

This review will dive into American Home Guard’s reputation, plans, and customer ratings and offer alternative home warranty companies to homeowners looking for coverage.

Top-Rated Alternatives to American Home Guard

Since American Home Guard is no longer in business, here are our top-rated home warranty alternatives.

1. American Home Shield

American Home Shield (AHS) is a veteran in the home warranty industry and one of the best home warranty companies available. AHS offers three coverage options—ShieldSilver™, ShieldGold™, and ShieldPlatinum™—with plans ranging between $40-$58 a month.

American Home Shield is ideal for those who want to customize their coverage, have generous coverage caps, and receive 24/7 customer service. AHS may not be a good option for you if you want to choose your own technician or live in Alaska.

2. First American Home Warranty

First American (FAHW) offers two coverage plans and has been a leader in the home warranty industry for over 35 years. What distinguishes them from other home warranty companies is their First Class Upgrade optional coverage which covers systems and appliances if they were improperly installed, maintained, or modified.

First American may be a good choice for people who own an older home and are unsure about their system and appliance health. It may not be the best option if you own a new home with brand new appliances and systems that are covered under a manufacturer’s warranty.

American Home Guard Reviews

American Home Guard had very negative customer reviews on its Better Business Bureau (BBB) page. In 2017, the BBB identified a pattern of complaints against the company. American Home Guard never resolved the underlying problems that upset customers.

Here are a few reviews from American Home Guard customers:

This company denied my claim because they said they don’t cover electrical. What?!!! My AC quit working in the summer heat of Florida and I had a licensed contractor affidavit that the issue was NOT electrical even though there is no indication that electrical is not covered. Run from this Company, RUN!” — Larry C. on 1/17/2017

Total scam!!! Was offered a discounted warranty but was never sent a confirmation or any policy. After multiple attempts and layers of false statements promising to send the policy, it to date has never arrived. This goes back to May of 2018. It is now August 29. These people are professional scammers. Buyer beware! Have filed [a] dispute with MasterCard.” — Boze on 8/29/2018

Preferred Provider: American Home Shield

Unlike American Home Guard, American Home Shield is a reputable business that offers quality services and a breadth of plans. Additionally, while American Home Guard offered coverage in only 38 states, American Home Shield offers coverage in all states except Alaska.

American Home Shield allows customers to select their own service fee, either $75, $100, or $125. The higher the service fee, the lower the monthly premium. The AHS claims process is also fast and easy, with American Home Shield claiming that it responds to customer service requests within the first 24 hours 98% of the time.
