The American Automobile Association (AAA) started as a membership club for vehicle owners more than 100 years ago. Since then, AAA has expanded its services to include insurance coverage, like home insurance and renters insurance.

To help you find the best renters insurance, the This Old House Reviews Team created this AAA renters insurance review that compares coverage, pricing, claims process, customer service, and more.

AAA Renters Insurance Pros & Cons

Take a look at what AAA does and doesn’t offer to its customers:

✔ Discount for being an AAA member✘ Requires an annual membership fee
✔ Over 100 years in business✘ Better Business Bureau rating of F
✔ Unique add-on options, like accidental death and refrigerated personal property

AAA Renters Insurance Coverage

A typical renters insurance policy will cover damage from the following events:

  • Fire and lightning
  • Extreme weather
  • Explosions
  • Riots
  • Damage by vehicle
  • Smoke damage
  • Vandalism
  • Theft
  • Falling objects
  • Weight of snow, ice, or sleet
  • Water damage not from floods

AAA renters insurance includes four types of coverage:

1. Personal Property Coverage

This part of your insurance protects the cost of your belongings. To make sure you get enough coverage for all of your items, take inventory of them, and estimate their value. If a covered event damages your belongings, AAA will give you a replacement cash value (RCV) policy, meaning they’ll give you enough money to replace your damaged items as if they are new.

In the quote we received, AAA covered $25,000 for personal property.

2. Loss of Use Coverage

If a covered event makes your home inhabitable for a short period of time, AAA will cover additional living expenses, like the cost of a hotel room or the cost of meals.

In our quote, AAA covered $5,000 for loss of use.

3. Liability Coverage

Liability coverage protects you if you’re liable for bodily injury or property damage to someone else. An example of this may be if a pipe bursts and floods the apartment below you, damaging the resident’s belongings.

In the AAA quote we received, the company covered $100,000 for liability.

4. Coverage for Medical Payments to Others

If a guest gets injured in your home and has to see a doctor for treatment, your policy will cover their medical bills.

In our quote, AAA covered $1,000 per person for medical payments to others.

Here are the coverage limitations based on North Carolina data:

AAA Range of Coverage

Coverage TypeRange of Coverage
Personal Property$10,000–$100,000
Loss of Use20% of personal property
Medical Payments to Others$1,000–$5,000

If you want to customize your AAA renters insurance policy, you can add on endorsements or floaters. Here are your options:

  • Refrigerated personal property
  • Personal injury
  • Identity fraud expense
  • Limited water backup
  • Scheduled personal property
  • Accidental death

How Much Does AAA Cost?

The average AAA renters insurance policy costs $15–$30 per month, according to the company’s website. To confirm this price, our team requested a quote for a one-bedroom apartment in Raleigh, North Carolina:

AAA Cost Breakdown

Monthly Cost$13.12 ($10.88 down payment for month 1)

Your AAA renters insurance deductible would be $500, $1,000, or $2,500.

Note: This quote reflects an AAA membership. You can still get a renters insurance policy if you don’t have an AAA membership, but the policy will be more expensive.

To get your own quote, have the following information on hand:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Safety features
  • Marital status
  • Address
  • Email address
  • Phone number

Customer Service and Claims Support

You can access your policy and file a claim using the customer portal and mobile app. If you would prefer to speak to a company representative, you should try your local AAA insurance agent first because they will know your state’s renters insurance policies best.

You can also talk to AAA national employees by calling 866-298-1232 for sales, 800-207-3618 for customer service, and 800-207-3618 for claims. The sales center is open Monday through Friday, from 7 am–9 pm and Saturday through Sunday, from 8 am–6 pm. General customer service is available Monday through Saturday, from 6 am–7 pm. The claims department is open 24/7.

Our Conclusion

AAA renters insurance is a viable option if you’re a current AAA member. While you can still get a policy without a membership, your premiums will be more expensive and you won’t get to enjoy perks like rekeying and towing.

Before deciding if AAA renters insurance is the right policy for you, get quotes from at least three providers to compare coverage and pricing options:

Our Methodology

The This Old HouseReviews team is committed to providing comprehensive and unbiased reviews to our readers. This means earning your trust through transparency and having the data to back up our ratings and recommendations.

With that in mind, we created an objective rating system to score each renters insurance company. Here’s what that review process looked like:

  • We analyze the information on each company’s website. This allows us to determine what products and services are offered by each renters insurance provider.
  • We get a sample quote from the companies by either talking to a sales representative or by using the online quote tool. This tells us what a policy looks like and costs.
  • We test customer service by talking to a company representative, finding out their hours of operation, and determining what technological features are available for customers.
  • We update all of this information on a continuous basis, storing it in a proprietary database that allows us to compare dozens of home insurance companies against each other.

With this data, we created a rating methodology to score each home insurance company. Our rating system is a weighted, 100-point scale based on the following factors:

  • Coverage (30): We rated home insurance companies higher if they offered the six main types of renters protection—dwelling, other structures, personal property, loss of use, liability, and medical payments to others coverage.
  • State availability (7.5): Companies scored higher if they covered more states than their competitors.
  • Customer service (15): This factor is based on our communications with the company representatives, as well as the companies’ claims and quotes processes, availability throughout the week, and customer service information found on their websites.
  • Technology (12.5): Technology can increase the efficiency of filing and tracking home insurance claims. Companies scored higher if they had technology options like mobile apps and online chat functions.
  • Reputation (20): We gauged trustworthiness based on years of experience and Better Business Bureau (BBB) ratings.
  • Additional benefits (15): Companies that offered optional features, like discounts and endorsements, scored higher than competitors that didn’t.

Our Reviews team has a full-time researcher who collects and regularly updates data points from every company to help us compare them on key factors such as coverage, service, and dependability.
