Nevada Homeowners Insurance Coverage

Homeowners insurance policies in Nevada can be broken down into six main coverage types:

  1. Dwelling coverage—Dwelling coverage is the primary category of any home insurance policy, and it typically determines the amount of coverage in the other categories. Set your dwelling coverage to be equal to or greater than your home’s estimated value to ensure your provider will pay for the entire cost of rebuilding or replacing your home after a covered peril.
  2. Other structures coverage—This coverage type pays for the rebuilding or replacing of structures on your property that aren’t connected to your home or considered part of your dwelling. This could include fences, backyard storage sheds, and detached garages. The amount of coverage for this type is usually around 10% of your dwelling limit.
  3. Loss of use coverage—This pays for additional living expenses that you may accrue after a covered peril. For instance, if a fire leaves you stranded from your home while it’s being repaired or rebuilt, your provider will pay for hotel fees or gas for the extra commute under your policy’s loss of use coverage.
  4. Personal property coverage—This covers your personal items when they’re lost, stolen, damaged, ruined, vandalized, or destroyed. Your provider will reimburse you for the depreciated value of your items unless you pay extra for replacement cost coverage, which replaces them with brand new ones. The limit usually equals around 75% of your dwelling coverage, but you can typically customize that amount based on the inventory of your belongings.
  5. Personal liability coverage—If you ever have company over and they get injured, you could be liable for thousands of dollars in medical bills or legal fees if they choose to sue you. Luckily, home insurance will pay for those costs with personal liability coverage. Your policy usually comes with a limit of $100,000–$300,000, but you can add more coverage if necessary.
  6. Medical payments to others coverage—Although personal liability coverage covers medical payments for visitors who get injured on your property at your fault, this coverage type covers medical bills for injuries from accidents that weren’t your fault. The limit for this category is usually $1,000–$5,000.

Factors To Consider Before Buying Homeowners Insurance

Consider the following factors before buying a Nevada home insurance policy:

  • Home value—Determining your home’s value is an important part of purchasing a home insurance policy, since it helps you figure out how much dwelling coverage you’ll need for the complete rebuilding or replacement of your house after a covered disaster. Although the companies in this review all have online home valuation tools that you can use during the quote process, we recommend consulting a professional appraiser or a licensed insurance agent to give you the most accurate estimate of how much coverage you need for your home.
  • Natural disasters—Although not a coastal state, Nevada experiences plenty of natural disasters that could damage your home. Storms and wildfires are covered under a standard home insurance policy, but earthquakes and floods may require extra coverage. Flood insurance can be purchased from your agent or separately through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Earthquake coverage can simply be added as an endorsement or add-on to your policy with Liberty Mutual.
  • Additional coverage—Each provider offers a slew of optional coverage items to help customers customize their policy. These are often referred to as add-ons or endorsements, and they typically include coverage for items like water or sewage back-up, earthquakes, high-value personal property items, and identity theft.

Our Rating Methodology

The This Old House Reviews Team is committed to providing comprehensive and unbiased reviews to our readers. This means earning your trust through transparency and having the data to back up our ratings and recommendations.

With that in mind, we created an objective rating system to score each home insurance company. Here’s what that review process looked like:

  • We analyze the information on each company’s website. This allows us to determine what products and services are offered by each home insurance provider.
  • We get a sample quote from the companies by either talking to a sales representative or by using the online quote tool. This tells us what a policy looks like and costs.
  • We test customer service by talking to a company representative, finding out their hours of operation, and determining what technological features are available for customers.
  • We update all of this information on a continuous basis, storing it in a proprietary database that allows us to compare dozens of home insurance companies against each other.

With this data, we created a rating methodology to score each home insurance company. Our rating system is a weighted, 100-point scale based on the following factors:

  • Coverage (30): We rated home insurance companies higher if they offered the six main types of homeowner protection—dwelling, other structures, personal property, loss of use, liability, and medical payments to others coverage.
  • State availability (7.5): Companies scored higher if they covered more states than their competitors.
  • Customer service (15): This factor is based on our communications with the company representatives, as well as the companies’ claims and quotes processes, availability throughout the week, and customer service information found on their websites.
  • Technology (12.5): Technology can increase the efficiency of filing and tracking home insurance claims. Companies scored higher if they had technology options like mobile apps and online chat functions.
  • Reputation (20): We gauged trustworthiness based on years of experience and Better Business Bureau ratings.
  • Additional benefits (15): Companies that offered optional features, like discounts and endorsements, scored higher than competitors that didn’t.

The This Old House Reviews Team has a full-time researcher who collects and regularly updates data points from every company to help us compare them on key factors such as coverage, service, and dependability.
