Painting Old Log Cabin

We live in a 100+ yr old log cabin that was previously painted and needs new paint. Some of the logs have splits and have been covered with metal. The paint is starting to peal on the logs and the metal. What is the best way to paint? Do we need to prime the whole house or just the metal? Do we need to prime at all?

Re: Painting Old Log Cabin

You don't paint log houses as a rule. The logs constantly absorb and release moisture so regular paint does not last, and it shortens the life of the logs. The only paint that does work is an old fashioned paint that is breathable and uses iron oxide, so it is only available in red (rusty red).
