Old cabinet in bathroom - what is it?

We recently moved into a 1936 house and have this odd cabinet in the bathroom. Top opens, bottom used to but painted shut. VERY curious what it is and what is in the bottom half. Looks like a mini medicine cabinet. Any ideas? I don't want to pry it open unless I know what is behind it - or damage it:

looks to me like a DIYer wanted some extra storage space and built a small cabinet into a stud bay about 50-60 years ago. not that uncommon. either embrace it or get rid of it.

if you get lucky, maybe the bottom portion was where he hid all of his extra cash and g-o-l-d coins.

Can't comment on the cabinet...but That's some CRAZY tile! I love it!

I think that the treasures are in the attic, not in the bathroom cabinet.

This built in looks pretty useful though, for various bathroom necessities.

The tile is wild, you're right.

Ha Ha - maybe an old toothbrush. The tile is original 1936 tile made by a Dallas artist - so taking it out is not an option. I can barely see in the bottom part but may even look like a pipe or something - so maybe it was some old sink or something they covered up - who knows! Thought it might be something cool!

Maybe the bottom cabinet is hiding a valve or cleanout.

You beat me to it. Bold is the adjective that comes to mind. I like it too.
Bet you won't find that pattern at a big box store.
PS. No idea about the lower panel, but hiding a valve seems plausible. Personally, curiosity would get the get the best of me.

Looks about the right size to replace in in wall electric bathroom heater.

It may have been an ironing board cabinet that was repurposed during a remodel. If you can pop the bottom open, see if there is any electrical. To see if Jack might be right, look for an abandoned breaker location that is marked "bathroom heat"

I'd open it: there may be a valve or clean-out in there which you should know about. Should be relatively easy to cut through the old paint to free the face panel. But I'm just the curious sort.

The biggest surprise I've ever found lurking in a bathroom wall was hundreds or old razor blades. Many old medicine cabinets has a slot in the bottom for this, and somewhere along the way it had been moved to another wall so the find was unexpected there!

I remember the medicine cabinet in the house where I grew up had the slot for razor blades. I always wondered many years it would take to fill it up. My house doesn't have one and I use an electric razor.
