Best time to aerate and overseed in New England

I have a year old seeded lawn and Im looking to aerate and re-seed to fill in some gaps. When is it a good time to do this in the Boston area? Is September too early or should I wait until October?

I would do it now. You want it to germinate & grow some roots before the really cold weather sets in. Then in the spring it will have a head start sending out roots & filling in.
