1960s plasticized finish on kitchen cabinets

I have some nice kitchen cabinets. They are solid wood, but the doors have a veneer over the solid base. The finish has worn off around some of the handles.

I would like to remove SOME of the finish so I could use a pickling stain to lighten the color a bit and blend in the worn spots.

I would like to avoid heavy duty strippers. I'd like to avoid the fumes AND I'm afraid of damaging the veneer. It appears to be some sort of plasticized finish. I've tried a few things incuding acetone and denatured alcohol with little effect. I keep thinking there must be some trick to this kind of finish, but my questions to staff at home depot and real hardware stores has not yielded any suggestions.

Does anyone have any thoughts?
