Finding a Good Architect
Where do you begin? And how do you choose?
My husband and I are considering an addition to our home. How do we find a good architect?

Steve Thomas replies: To find a good architect, start by networking with friends and neighbors. Then sit down for a meeting with the ones they recommend to you. Ask them for references from both homeowners and contractors who can give you more information about their work.
I'd do the first couple of meetings with your architect on an hourly basis to see if you get along. It's going to be a long and intimate relationship. In the process of a renovation, many hitherto obscure details of your life will be discussed, so you and your spouse need to be comfortable working with your architect. Successful design is the true foundation on which a house is built or renovated.
