Turns out that’s how Brookline apprentice Carly Comitino found out about last year’s casting call—a friend of her family mentioned it to her, knowing that she had an interest in the building trades. So if you know someone who might be a good candidate, encourage him or her to submit some basic information and a self-produced video that tells about their interest in a career in the trades.
Two people will win a paid apprenticeship to work alongside the TOH TV team on two renovations, in Boston and Rhode Island, during spring and summer 2019. The deadline for submissions is March 1.
Since launching the Generation NEXT initiative in 2016, TOH has trained apprentices on three major renovation projects—Newton (Season 39), Jamestown Net-Zero (Season 40), and Brookline (Season 40)—as well as shined a spotlight on dozens of people pursuing the building trades and helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for trade school scholarships. The team even traveled to Washington, D.C., last May to help rally interest with elected officials.
Next up: The TOH team will announce the latest Generation NEXT initiatives at the trade-only NAHB Builders Show, February 19–21, in Las Vegas. “Talk to any contractor in any trade, and it’s the number-one issue they are struggling with—bringing new people into the business,” says This Old House Ventures Executive Chairman Eric Thorkilsen. “We are committed to this effort.”
