Watch It Again: Ask This Old House
Roger Cook shares his to-do list for putting your yard and garden to sleep
Come autumn, TOH landscape contractor Roger Cook turns to his fall checklist to make sure the yard and landscape get the proper preparation for winter, a season that New Englanders regard with respect.
His tried-and-true list covers many things, including:
- aerating the lawn (to ensure water and nutrients get absorbed)
- adding fertilizer
- mowing one last time (shorter grass is more resistant to disease)
- collecting leaves
- planting shrubs (to help them establish roots)
- pruning trees
To see Roger’s method for pruning, watch Ask TOH Season 7, Episode 18, as he helps a homeowner prune a crabapple tree that had been neglected. You can also go way back to the very beginning of Ask TOH to see Roger’s technique for aerating the lawn in Season 1, Episode 16.
