Why is my electric baseboard not heating up?

Hi,

Over the holidays my electric baseboard (240V) stopped heating up. The thermostat on the wall was showing that the board is heating up but the baseboard remained cold.

I checked the breakers and it wasn't tripped, so convinced it was the old baseboard that finally (probably original to my 30-yr old house) gave up...I bought a new one.

Today I installed the new baseboard. The thermostat is showing again that the baseboard is heating up but it is not.

What else can I do to troubleshoot it myself.

Please advice.

Thanks!

Sounds like the only thing left is the thermostat.

This is a newer thermostat. I replaced all thermostats in the house few months ago with the Aube by Honeywell TH115-A-240D/U Electric Heating 7-Day Programmable Thermostat.

If there are other thermostats then try swapping out one from another room to see what happens. Just because they are newer doesn't mean they can't go bad.

Thanks, I will give it a try tonight.
Also, is it possible that something happened to the wiring (in between the thermostat and the baseboard)? and if so, what would be the best way to check it?

Thanks!

I kinda agree with bsum1 in that the thermostat could be faulty.

However, since the thermostat is powered up would indicate voltage is fine from the breaker to the thermostat.

It's possible the wire connections from the thermostat to the baseboard heater may have an open condition.
It may very well be in the box the thermostat is mounted. Likely there are wire nut connections --- check those to make sure they are tight and proper.
Also confirm the connections at the heater.
*** Turn off the power at the breaker when doing any checks ****

You could also disconnect the wires from the back of the thermostat and connect the Line ( from the breaker ) to Load ( to the baseboard heater ) matching color for color.

Turn the breaker on and the heater should start to warm up.
If this is the case then it's the thermostat.

If it doesn't then there is an open condition between the wall box and the baseboard heater.

Usually the cables don't fail unless they have been cut ---- more often it's at a junction ---- wire nut or screw terminal. There are occasions when the copper breaks off under the wire nut or screw connectors.

I can not imagine trying to troubleshoot electrical problems without a multi-meter and at least the rudiments of knowledge on how to use it.

Thank you so much for all your help!!!

Turned out that the heater and thermostat were OK but (as canuk wrote) one wire got lose in the thermostat.

We are nice and toasty now :)

Thanks again and Happy New Year!
