Trim Brads(break off)

Back in the late 70's early 80's I used a small harden steel brad to install trim and moulding on cabinet doors. These brads were driven in about 3/4 of their length and then tapped sideways with a hammer, they snapped off flush with the trim or moulding. Safety goggles were a must when using them since there was no control where the broken brad would go. I am almost sure that our friends at OASHA had banned these little nails but if they are still avaiable I would like to purchase a box, case what ever it might take for a project that I am working on. I am using trim that is no more than a 1/4 inch thick and 3/8 in wide. The smallest air brads split and damage the trim. Any help would be appreciated.
