Returns needed on 2nd floor?

I live in a 40 year old Cape (moderately sized at 1800 SF), with a forced hot air duct system. We're looking at adding central air and have ample supply ducts on each floor but only have return ducts on the first floor, will this be a problem? Suggestions?

Re: Returns needed on 2nd floor?

Shouldn't be a problem, my first home had the same situation. All of the cold air returns were on the first floor, and the A/C worked fine. I never heard of adding cold air returns upstairs, but you would have to talk to a heating expert about that. I would guess it would be quite expensive and labor intense. Good luck.

Thanks for the information... it is always good to get testimonials from those who have been there! Much appreciated!

Anyone else have problems or issues with a lack of 2nd floor registers?

I am dealing with this same issue now - did you move forward without 2nd floor returns? What were your results?

Hoping you are still active on here 8 years later! :D
