Open floor plan stairs

I recently purchased a house that was built in the 40's with an open floor plan. My problem is that the staircase going to the second floor does not have any railings. I baught newel posts and balusters I would like to install but due to the way the staircase was constructed I would have to cut the newel posts at a 45 deg angle. Any ideas how I could attach these ? I have pictures if it would help understand my problem

Pictures of the staircase and the posts would help.

as requested here are some pictures. I don't really want to install them in front of the stairs due to very minimal space.

here is what I would do. take your posts and cut your angle on the bottom so that they will be plumb when installed then mount them on a 1 x 4 then mount your 1 x 4 to the stair runner

Or you could notch them and mount them on the side of the stair stringer.

When notching, how much can you take away? I have a 4 x 4 maple post made of two 2 x 4s glued together. Can I notch it to 2 x 4. The posts are about 6 feet apart.

I don't believe you would have any problem notching to the 2X4. That should leave more that enough for the strength you'll need.
