Old mole tunnels making lawn/yard unsafe

Hi,

I'm not sure if I should post this in the Lawn section or not, but our yard is about 3-4,000 sq. ft, pretty bare of plant beds except for the edges, the rest is covered by grass. We have had this house for almost 3 years.

This last year the ground has seemed to have settled quite a bit and has become quite rutted from all the existing mole tunnels that lie beneath (the home was a rental for 5 years before we bought it) There are high patches and low patches and all sorts of dips/holes/ruts. There still is a bit of mole action, but we have been trapping them regularly.

We will have to take on fixing this, but money is a bit of an issue. We also have an 8 year old child and 14 month old dog that use it regularly, so I don't want it to take weeks :o

We are thinking we may have to rototil as much as we can without destroying existing roots, level it all and then sod? We are so new to this and would love any ideas anyone might have. Are we crazy to do this ourselves? Many say we are.
