difference between rip and crosscut

I have an old hand saw that i would like to sharpen and start using again. It has 5 teeth per inch. Now is it a rip or crosscut. from what i understand a rip saw does not use a teeth set where as a crosscut does.

Bill see if this helps https://www.wonkeedonkeetools.co.uk/handsaws/what-is-the-difference-between-crosscut-and-rip-teeth
Usually a cross cut saw has small fine teeth while a rip saw has deep teeth. A croos cut saw will cut in both direction while a rip saw only cuts in the one direction.

Re: difference between rip and crosscut

I got my old saw sharpened by an old timer. WHAT a joy to use it flies through 3-4 inches per stroke. I tried it on a cross cut and it did very good also.

thanks Jack.
