Can you help me find this radiator part?

My radiator leaks steam. I closed the supply valve and the leak stopped, so I'm under the impression the graphite packing, beneath the packing nut, needs to be replaced. Upon removing the packing nut, that sure seems to be the case.

I bought new graphite packing but when I attempted to tighten the nut I stripped the threads. I don't know if I stripped the threads on the supply valve or on the nut itself, but rather than buy a new supply valve and go through that hassle, I'd rather try to find a new packing nut and try that first.

I'm having a challenge finding this packing nut, though. My local home stores don't offer it and I can't seem to locate it ******. The nut measures 1" in diameter, if measuring from the inside of the nut, from thread to thread. It measures 1.25", if measuring the diameter of the outside of the nut.

Does anyone have any advice?

Finding a replacement packing nut will be very lucky at best. From looking at the valve it appears like you put T-tape on the threads. Try removing the T-tape and some of the new packing. You may find the nut to be OK. What you have is a one pipe steam system. There is very little pressure associated with that type system. It should take very little to prevent a leak. Very little packing should be needed.

Nice suggestion given by you. I am also appropriate with your things. This information will be very valuable to him and also to me. Thanks for help. Keep it up.

I have a very similar system and one of my packing nuts (pictured above) cracked. Is there anywhere that actually carries these to replace them? I tried all the usual places and a few specialty and none even carry them. I really don't want to replace the entire valve if I only need the nut.

I have been buying very old steam and cast iron parts for many years. I know they ship all over Canada. I will give you a heads up the parts are used and or new and very pricey but if you need a left right 4 1/2 inch black 3/4 nipple they will have it.

I contacted that company and several others. All said that they did not have that part. Seems odd that such a simple part and no one to take my money for one.

have you tried on line stores?

Plumbers who replace heating systems with some old radiators sitting in their yards?

I have tried MANY on-line retailers and have gotten the response that my parts are "ancient" and that no one carries it. I think the only option I have at this point is finding someone getting rid of them or a local plumber who has spare parts.

As a side note, as a temporary fix I am going to try to weld the nut shut so it wont leak. Won't last very long, but it is better than nothing.
