Block off air duct

We recently added on and I was wondering if I could use the existing air duct that heated our old upstairs (which won't get used very often anymore, only for company) and re-route it into the addition since we need more heat in that area. I'd like to leave the existing duct work in place, and was thinking of using some sort of a wye with a damper-like apparatus to block off the airflow going into the old living space..

You can do it, but it will weaken the air flow.

Then you'd have to adjust the rest of the system to compensate.
