Laundry Room for Vertical Spaces
A simple rearrangement of task areas takes advantage of vertical space to make cleanup easier for both two- and four-legged family members
Even a laundry room that's fully functional can be improved to accommodate a family's evolving needs. In the case of Barbara and Edward Marshall of Akron, Ohio, their mixed-breed dogs, Roxy and Bella, dictated changes by claiming the 6½-by-8½-foot laundry room as their master suite. The pair, who like to get muddy on the Marshalls' large property, needed frequent bathing, which involved Barb or Ed lifting the dogs into the room's small utility sink. The dogs also liked to sleep in the middle of the room—which has separate entries to the kitchen, garage, and deck—so everyone had to step over them.

Barbara knew she needed a shower stall for the dogs, and contractor Ken Perrin was brought in to make it happen. Installing a stacked washer and dryer freed space for a shower with a commercial hand sprayer to regulate water flow. The shower is also used for cleaning muddy boots and gardening tools, and for hanging the grandkids' swimsuits. The dogs' bed is now tucked into the middle cabinet under the drawer. "Ken measured the dogs to be sure they'd fit," says Barbara. "Now the room works for everyone."
Shown: Appliances, cabinets, and a small utility sink lined one wall. The awkward setup meant the owners had to lift dogs to bathe them.
An easy-care quartz counter is used for folding clothes. The upper cabinet stows supplies for laundry; the drawer holds small tools.
Homeowner tip: "In a tight space, it comes down to inches—measure carefully so there's room for all the functions you need." —Barb Marshall, Akron, OH
