Cutting Crown Molding

Bridging the gap in corners

How do you cut crown molding to fit inside corners without a gap between the pieces?

— John, Oberlin, OH

Tom Silva replies: To cut a crown molding to fit an inside corner, first run one piece into the corner with a square cut. Then take the second piece and mitre it on a 45-degree angle. Then hold up the second piece to the first, mark the front edge with a pencil from the top to bottom following the profile. Then take a coping saw and back cut the molding following its profile. After making the cut hold the crown up and slide into the corner and see if any fine-tuning is needed. Sometimes a file and sandpaper help.
