Water heater anode rod

I want to replace the anode rod on my water heater which is about 5 years old. I have two questions

1) what metal anode rod is best? I understand there are different metal anode rods

2) Instead of breaker bar, can we use impact wrench? Would it damage tank glass lining?

Re: Water heater anode rod

I would suggest zinc. Never aluminum. That is what comes with most lower quality water heaters. Not sure why. Any good plumbing supply house will have a nice selection of zinc rods.

The rod is not in the water heater all that tight. I use a breaker bar and sometimes with a cheater bar. Spray with a lubricant if needed and let it sit for a while.

Does your water smell like rotten eggs or are there any other issues with it?
