Richard Trethewey knows that without modern plumbing, life would not be as wonderful as it is today. He knows that his work and the work of other plumbers help create better living conditions and add to the value of life, and that’s something he takes great pride in.
People Take It for Granted
But they shouldn’t. Richard understands how lucky we are to have safe, running water piped into our homes and a system to effectively remove the waste. Water can carry bugs, diseases, and bacteria, making people seriously sick. But with modern plumbing, water is safe for drinking, cooking, washing, and more.
We’ve Come a Long Way
Our modern plumbing and waste systems have come a long way in the past few centuries. In the past, people in cities would use their chamber pots and then throw the contents out the window, yelling a warning to the people below. Similarly, in medieval castles, waste was thrown into the moat circling the castle. We now have sewer systems that remove waste from our homes, providing another option other than throwing it through our windows.
When Modern Plumbing Became Necessary
Modern plumbing became necessary when we moved from an agricultural-based society to one focusing on urban settings and cities. Millions of people living in a relatively small area needed a way to dispose of their waste safely. At first, cities polluted the rivers around them, but modern sewage treatment allows us to purify wastewater and recycle it into the water.
Pipes Define the Modern Era
The modern plumbing era could be defined as the point at which pipes were able to deliver and distribute water throughout a home. In the US, this was the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the ability to pipe water through the home was very high-tech at the time. Residents could now have access to water at any time, including hot water that doesn’t need to be heated on a stove.
