New Home - City Water - Egg smell one sink - Cold Water Only - Smell in hose not sink

New home built 2016 - roughly 1 year old

Issue: Egg smell in one sink in the bathroom - only place smell exists - only with cold water

Two sinks in the bathroom - other sink has no smell

Sink - Porcelain
Faucet - Moen
House cold water - PEX
Braided line from PEX to faucet

Tested and verified

No smell hot water
Disconnected cold water line from faucet and ran directly to bucket - smell is still there - so smell is not coming from sink or faucet
Other sink that I assume shares PEX line until it splits has no smell

At this time if the bathroom is sharing PEX up until it splits in the bathroom than the problem is somewhere between the split and the end of the braided line - going to remove the braided line tonight and see if that solves anything.

If PEX does not split and is a full run then there is something wrong somewhere in that run.

Why would I get that egg smell in a brand new house in a PEX line to a single sink?

If the smell is in the pex someplace how do I get rid of it? Do I have to shut off water and then try to drain out line and then flush it with chlorine or something - I think it would be really difficult to try to do that in reverse.

Thank you for any help!

Re: New Home - City Water - Egg smell one sink - Cold Water Only - Smell in hose not

We had this problem when we added a bathroom to our basement. It seems there is an harmless bacteria that likes to home in the braided line. The odor disappeared when we switched out the braided stainless steel faucet supply hose on the cold water side with a PVC one. However, we are on well water so it may not be the case for you.

Have you had the water tested? Egg smell means high sulfur content. Just because a house is new, does not mean they used the best quality components. Go to any plumbing supply house and purchase a water test kit. Then test your water. Test it at a couple places. Right off the pressure reducing valve, at each device. Go from there as the steps to take next.
