Best insulation materials

What are the best current state of the art insulation materials to use in the exterior walls when building our new home? We want to prevent moisture entry through the brick exterior wall, prevent condensation inside the wall and assure best energy savings. Is there a "best combination" of materials (spray on insulation plus fiberglass batting, etc.)?? Any info would be appreciated.

Your building department has the guidelines you are looking for. They should also be printed on your approved plans. Your assigned city building inspector will want to see you following the code before he can sign off and let you close walls.

In my city we use batts.

In case your plans don't include insulation instructions, visit your building department for details and see if you can pick up a pamphlet about the minimum required and types of insulation approved for your city.

"Best" isn't always as easy a choice as it may seem. Sprayed foams perform very well, but if you ever need to go into the wall for anything it will have to be cut out and resprayed, adding to costs then. Properly installed fiberglass batts and a properly installed vapor barrier offer good performance with much less hassle and cost if you have to go into the wall later on. "Roxul" offers similar performance and adds fire protection as well; burning foam fumes can be deadly. Installed cost versus gained performance is another consideration. If it costs 50% more to gain 5% in performance which could take 40 years to pay off, the lesser option may be the better one overall.

I'd recommend that you have several insulators scope it out and give you their recommendations and bids. Have each one explain the basis of their choices to see what differs and why. That way you can make an informed choice and the right choice in getting what you want. I don't do insulation, I have a contractor who is superb at that who knows his business far better than I do so I just let him have at it knowing that it will be right in the end (and at a lower cost than most as well). You need someone like that.

Be aware you do not want to insulate your house so well it becomes a giant thermos bottle. You need some fresh air exchange.

Spray in closed cell foam.
