Every contractor or builder has their favorite trade-specific tool. Host Kevin O’Connor brought master carpenter Nathan Gilbert, mason Mark McCullough, and landscape contractor Lee Gilliam together back at the shop to talk about theirs.
Nathan Appreciates His Scribing and Center-Finding Tool
Nathan keeps a special layout tool in his truck or tool belt at all times. This tool allows him to draw perfectly placed ⅛-inch to ½-inch lines along the edge of any board or jamb. It also allows him to find the center of a board, as it can be placed on the board and twisted into place for the perfect placement. The built-in magnet also helps keep it handy as well as find screws under drywall compound for studfinding.
Mark Likes His Conversation-Allowing Hearing Protection
Mason Mark McCullough’s favorite tool is his electronic ear protection. His ear muffs have an adjustable dial that allows him to hear conversations and other safe noises around him. However, when a dangerously loud noise occurs, the muffs detect the noise and immediately block it out. This allows Mark to have conversations safely around the job site while preventing hearing damage.
Lee’s Favorite is a Set of Stand-Up Sod Cutters
In the past, Lee used to have to cut sod with a jab saw or utility knife. It was difficult and it required being hunched over. But, his standing sod cutters make it easier. As a pair of sheers with long handles, Lee can trim sod to length or size without uncomfortably hunching over or kneeling.
Resources
Nathan has been into using a center scriber tool. It’s designed for precise marking and finding the center of a workpiece.
Lee says recently he’s been leaning heavily on his standing sod cutters, or long handle grass shears. The long handles allow for Lee to stand and make perfect cuts without straining his back.
Mark has over the ear protection with a noise cancellation feature. They block out the potentially harmful sounds of some power tools but allow for low level sounds.
Pro Tip: Research audiologist Mark Stephenson advises that finding the right hearing protection is personal: “The best hearing protector is the one that’s worn. There are over 300 different hearing protectors out there and some will be comfortable for one person and uncomfortable for another, just like shoes. So the important thing is to try different hearing protectors and find one that’s comfortable and convenient for you to use and wear it whenever you’re using power tools.”
