Bed Prep Before Edging: Before installing landscape edging, use a cultivator to fluff up your beds — it gets oxygen into compacted soil and can actually reduce how much mulch you need to add. As landscaper Lee Gillian explained on Ask This Old House: “Some people think you have to put three inches on every season and that’s not true. Like fluff up what’s there…give some oxygen to it and then put less mulch.”
