Use Your DIY Skills to Pay It Forward
For one day in early May, This Old House and HomeFront teamed up to show how anyone can put their knowledge to work helping needy homeowners repair and refresh their homes
For countless American families, the cost of even basic home repairs is out of reach. HomeFront is a community-based, volunteer-driven program that provides free repairs to seniors, the disabled, single-parent families, and other fixed- or low-income homeowners, enabling them to remain in their homes with an improved quality of life.
On the first Saturday of every May, HomeFront assembles crews of volunteers to help homeowners across the state of Connecticut repair and refresh their homes. On May 3, 2014, Team TOH was proud to take part in HomeFront Day for our 14th year.
HomeFront is just one of thousands of organizations that arranges such one-day "blitz" building events on national and local levels. It's easy to find one near you, and it's a truly rewarding experience. Scroll through this gallery to see what you can expect from a day of volunteering (note: Richard Trethewey not included!).
We overseeded the front yard to bring back lawn that had given way to sunburned grass.
Bright new flowers and fresh mulch livened up the planting beds in the front of the house.
Team TOH had their work cut out for them in the backyard, and removed a truckload of old brush and leaves to make way for new plantings.
Throughout the day, the Advil® #ReliefinAction mobile relief center visited several projects in the CT area, delivering much-needed relief in the form of product samples and afternoon refreshments for the volunteers.
Inside the house, TOH's very own plumbing and heating expert, Richard Trethewey, volunteered his time and expertise to replace a broken bathroom vanity and install a brand new water heater.

Richard also took some time to speak to the press about the importance of volunteering and helping families maintain—and therefore remain in—their homes.
The cracked and worn back deck was scrubbed, primed and painted with a weather-resistant coating for long-lasting protection.
After a long day's work, the team succeeded in turning this wildly-overgrown and neglected property into a beautiful place for the whole family to enjoy.
Team TOH is proud to have helped one deserving family on HomeFront Day 2014, and we extend our gratitude to Advil® #ReliefInAction, QUIKRETE, and L&L Evergreen for their support of this feel-good event.
