How to DIY a Rug
Supplies you’ll need: a canvas drop cloth, a foam roller, acrylic latex paint, a sewing machine (or washable hot glue for fabric), painter’s tape, and Scotchgard Fabric Protector
1. Size your drop cloth. Cut the canvas to your desired size—a 6x9 cloth can be trimmed into a 3x5 rug, for instance—allowing 1 inch on all sides for hemming.
2. Fold and secure the edges. If you don’t have a sewing machine, finish cut edges by rolling them under and securing them with washable hot glue for fabric.
3. Tape off your pattern. To create the pattern shown, tape off equidistant stripes, working from both ends toward the center. Then roll on paint in sections. Let dry for 24 hours.
4. Seal the surface. Spray on Scotchgard Fabric Protector (you’ll have to reapply after each washing). Place a nonslip pad on the floor, top it with the rug, and you’re ready to roll.
