How Should I Remove 1/2" Brick Veneer Backsplash?

I know, I should have never put it up, but it was the 70's! I'm finally getting to the remodeling of my kitchen and need a lot of guidance.
Is it possible to remove this thick brick veneer back splash and the sanded mastic holding it to the drywall without having to replace the drywall? I do not want to replace the cabinets, just the counter top, so tearing the drywall out is not a reasonable solution.
I'm definitely open-minded, but I will be doing the work myself, so please send me your suggestions!

There is no guarentee.  Expect to replace drywall.  If you get everything of cleanly then it is a plus.
