dishwater in the dishwasher

Our dishwasher runs and drains fine, but if we don't use it frequently, foul smelling water starts to pool at the bottom. It must be coming from the sink. Any ideas?

Make sure that the hose coming from the dishwasher to the sink drain has a high point somewhere that is as high as the bottom of the counter. This will ensure that any water draining from the sink is not forced into the dishwasher.

The drain hose (which is connected to the garbage disposal) doesn't reach the counter. It pretty much drops from the disposal to the drain hose. Could the disposal water be leaking down into it?

That's what is happening. Mike gave you the solution.

Agree with what had been posted.
Water flows down hill --- the reason the dishwasher drain hose should be at the underside of the counter is it's higher than the drain line or disposal to prevent back flow such as you have.
