Banging Noise

Just recently we are hearing loud banging noises coming from the kitchen upstairs. This noise sometimes sounds like someone lightly banging on the wall to a very loud thump that actually shakes the glassware on the counter. The water is never in use when this happens, it is heard at different hours during the day and night it and sometimes it is not heard for a few days. What could be causing this noise? We have our own well and septic the house is 19 years old.

Re: Banging Noise

Do you have an ice maker in the fridge?
It could be the valve opening and closing during a cycle.

No we don't, we can't figure out what can possibly be causing that noise.

Re: Banging Noise

Do you notice the well pump cycling to maintain pressure. The next time you hear it look at the pressure gauge at the well feed near the expansion tank(the big blue or gray thing).
It may be the pump running, which could be due to a leaking foot valve since you said the water is off.

Tried that already we have even shut the pump off, the noise was last heard around 6pm today the kitchen and all the water was not in use since noon today, the loudest we heard was last night just once and again it woke us up this morning four times.

Re: Banging Noise

You described the exact same problem we have in our home! Our house is about 20 years old, and we hear the same type of noise..sometimes soft, other times it's like something slamming into the foundation. It's enough to wake us up. It's definitely not something to do with the pipes/water. I hope someone has an answer! (and yes, "poltergeist" was someone's response to us as well!)

Re: Banging Noise

I think it's thermal expansion and stiction (static friction) at the water line attachment points.
