Adding support beams to an existing ceiling.

I am adding storage floor space on top of my existing garage. I will be putting in a couple of 3" X 10" support beams under the ceiling joist in order to change the ceiling joist into floor joist. The existing ceiling has 1/2" sheet rock. Do I need to remove the sheet rock where the beams are going to be placed? Or can I just put the beams up against the existing sheetrock? The floor load is just for standard household storage stuff.

The existing joists have to be resting on the new beams, so remove the drywall. BTW, what are the beams going to be resting on?

Hey thanks. The beams will be resting on jack studs/post.
