How to Patch a Swirl Textured Ceiling
- Start by protecting the walls with painter’s tape and plastic sheeting.
- If there are any cracks that need to be repaired, start by opening them up slightly with the painter’s tool. A hair-thin crack is hard to patch, while a V-shaped groove will accept joint compound better.
- Apply paint to the cracked and stained areas. Make sure to work the paint into the crack with the paint brush. Allow to dry.
- Once the primer is dry, fill the crack with joint compound, applying a light layer over the crack.
- Using the 4-inch flat paint brush, create a similar pattern to the rest of the ceiling in the wet mud. In Mauro’s case, the pattern called for a slight swirl, which he recreated by dragging the stiff-bristled brush through the wet mud and swirling it back to match the other patterns.
- Allow the joint compound to dry completely. Once dry, use a ceiling primer-and-paint combination to finish the ceiling. Apply one coat to the repair area and then repaint the rest of the ceiling if needed.
