Is there a special kind of brick used for facing?
— Josh, Danvers, Illinois
Tom says: The facing material you are probably referring to is a very
thin brick usually called veneer. Typically, it's only about a half-inch
thick. We used them on the Billerica project to face the foundation.
That saved us from having to shelf the foundation, which means that if
we had faced it with regular bricks, we would have had to build a step
into the foundation to allow for the bricks' thickness. With veneer
bricks you don't have to do that because they go on basically like tile.
We were able to match the veneering with the real brick that was used on
the Billerica chimney, and you couldn't tell where one started and one stopped.
