Finishing nails are typically set below the surface of the wood and then the holes are filled with putty. Here's another way: Slit the surface of the wood slightly with a drywall knife, then drive a nail behind the slit at an angle, setting it below the surface. From most angles, the nail holes will be hidden from view.
