Moving into a new home is an adjustment, but before you can begin settling in, you have to find the best way to transport your belongings. Professional movers, such as International Van lines (IVL), offer comprehensive packing and unpacking services to help streamline the process.

We at the This Old House Reviews Team evaluated professional movers across the country, using a detailed methodology to rank the best moving companies. From the movers that made our top picks, we reviewed International Van Lines to provide insights into the company’s services, costs, and practices.

Our Take on International Van Lines

In our evaluation of International Van Lines, we noted the company for its wide range of moving services, global availability, and straightforward quote process. Overall, our review team scored International Van Lines a 96 out of 100.

One standout feature is IVL’s insurance coverage, going a step beyond what most competitors offer outright. In addition to the two standard contents coverage options required by law, IVL offers its customers all-risk or named-perils insurance. We found these insurance options to be beneficial for a customer’s financial protection and peace of mind in an industry often marred by complaints of lost and damaged items.

Holding authority as a moving carrier and broker, IVL will outsource a portion of its contracts, and we uncovered mixed customer reviews regarding communication and the quality of service. However, by using a large partner network and its own in-house crews, IVL is able to coordinate relocation services nationwide and around the globe.

International Van Lines Cost

As with most full-service movers, IVL will factor your inventory weight and the distance of your move into the final moving cost. The moving date will also influence the total, with busier months seeing higher rates.

We collected quotes for moving a three-bedroom home to help you understand what costs to expect. Remember that these are baseline estimates and will increase or decrease depending on what services you select and the exact details of your move. The costs listed in the table below are moves from Atlanta, Georgia, to the listed city.

When you schedule your move with IVL, it requires a 33% deposit to reserve your moving date. For your final billing, you will pay 50% on the day of pickup and the remainder of the moving cost upon delivery.

International Van Lines Services

International Van Lines is a licensed moving broker and carrier, coordinating long-distance, international, and local moving services. IVL is a full-service provider, giving you a chance to manage your move without the heavy lifting or the hassle of driving a rental truck.

Professional Packing Service

IVL offers comprehensive packing assistance, sending professional moving crews who will pack every box for you. This service includes the disassembly and reassembly of basic furniture as necessary, and you can request crating for expensive items. IVL’s movers will also load, transport, unload, and unpack your shipment. For an additional fee, IVL will load and unload bulky items, such as treadmills and pool tables.

Auto Transport

Getting multiple vehicles to your new home can be a logistical headache, but IVL coordinates auto transport domestically and internationally. It uses open and enclosed carriers for interstate travel and container shipping for overseas travel. GPS tracking is provided for your peace of mind. IVL will transport motorcycles as part of its standard full-service package for an additional fee.

Contents Coverage and Third-party Insurance

IVL offers basic liability protection free of charge and full-value protection for an additional fee, with several deductible levels ranging from $150 to $2,000. It also works with a third-party insurer to offer all-risk and named-perils coverage. All-risk insurance is for IVL’s full-packing service and costs 4% of your items’ declared value. This coverage plan protects against any amount of physical loss or damage to the shipment, with claims handled directly by the insurance company instead of the movers.

Named-perils insurance is for IVL’s self-packing service and costs 3% of your items’ declared value. The insurance company pays out claims if you have a total loss of your shipment due to conditions outlined in the policy.

Piano Moving

Piano moving is best left to trained professionals who have the proper equipment and know the most effective techniques for moving such a heavy yet fragile item. IVL offers to move pianos for an additional fee that varies according to the type of piano, with a general range of $150 to $350.

Custom Crating

For full-service moves, IVL offers custom crating for fragile and high-value items. Movers will use basic protective materials such as pads and blankets at no extra charge, but you can expect to pay $250 to $400 for items packed in custom crates. These crates offer a higher level of protection during transit for household goods such as artwork, antiques, and electronics.

Corporate and Office Relocation

IVL is available to assist with corporate relocation in the United States and overseas and has flexibility to accommodate last-minute moves. A corporate relocation expert will help create your company’s move plan, ensuring that your employees can settle in the new location with minimal disruption to business.

The company can also move items out of your office for a full business relocation. This service includes standard packing assistance with add-on options such as IT removal and crating. Upon delivery of your shipment, you can request that IVL assist with storage and debris removal.

Storage Services

Short- and long-term storage solutions are available through IVL, with the first month included free of charge at the place of origin. You can also request to use the storage-in-transit option to have IVL hold your belongings closer to the destination. IVL prices storage according to the volume of your items at 50 cents per cubic foot.

International Services

In addition to assisting with cross-country moves, IVL holds authority as a freight forwarder through the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) to conduct international moving services. IVL can arrange to deliver your shipment by sea or by air and will provide destination services, such as unloading and debris removal. For small shipments, IVL can combine your inventory into a shared container to cut costs.

International Van Lines Availability

As the name suggests, International Van Lines can help you move around the world. Its website states that it focuses many of its domestic moves on the East Coast and midwestern United States. However, it can provide services to customers nationwide.

If there’s no IVL service provider near you, the team will work with a third-party agent to handle your move.

International Van Lines has branch locations in the following states:

  • Florida
  • California
  • Illinois
  • Pennsylvania
  • Texas

Although the company’s website mentions that it has warehouses available for storage nationwide, it does not list where they are located

International Van Lines Booking Process

The International Van Lines booking process is straightforward and includes the following steps:

  • Request a quote: Request a free quote by calling an IVL representative or by filling out the form on the IVL home page. You will need to provide basic information about your move, including the number of bedrooms, the projected move date, and the origin and destination cities.
  • Choose your services: When speaking with your IVL moving coordinator, you should specify your intention to self-pack or to use the company’s professional packing services. Mention whether the move will require using multiple flights of stairs or an elevator, and inquire about custom crating for any high-end items. Remember that moving bulky items, such as pianos, will result in higher fees. This is also the time to ask about vehicle shipping.
  • Survey your inventory: You have the option to schedule an in-home or virtual survey of your home’s inventory. You can also request a rough estimate by self-reporting your inventory, but a survey will result in the most accurate cost for your binding estimate.
  • Book your move: You will need to pay a 33% security deposit when you sign the contract to book your move. On your pickup date, 50% of the balance is due. You can pay with cash, cashier’s check, or money order. The remaining balance is due when IVL delivers your shipment.

For cancellations, IVL will fully refund your deposit unless you cancel within 2 days of your original booking date.

Check out some real International Van Lines customer reviews:

“I retained International Van Lines after getting quotes from about ten movers, and International Van Lines provided a fair price quote. They surpassed ** high expectations, packing and moving our furniture in driving rain and with great care for our antiques and fragile items. You should 100% choose them for your move!”
–Eddie via BBB

“I am continuing to wait for an update on where my things are. The last update I received was 13 days ago saying my things would be en route at the end of last week. I have not received any updates since then. I call and email daily with no response. I cannot get anyone on the phone. The company was responsive until they had my things in hand.”
–Sarah via BBB

“This was my first experience with International. I moved across the state with a lot of things, both bulky and an abundance of assorted small things. They were very helpful and courteous. Although a bit slow, overall satisfied; would use them again.”

–David R. via Yelp

“Front end service was fine, but execution lacked. The movers that were subcontracted to do a full pack and move (pack my whole house and move it) showed up 5 hours late and only arrived with two guys. That may not have been terrible except that the late arrival put them in at 9pm, and now at nearly 4am they are just finishing. On top of that, they wanted to dispute the fixed price estimate on arrival that appeared to be overestimated by having three 6×6 bookshelves instead of the two I actually own, as well as several things originally on the list that were not.”

–Philip M. via Yelp
