Not all pipe plumbing projects or types of pipes require soldering. In this video, This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey shows two no-solder ways to make watertight pipe connections.
Steps:
1. To install a compression fitting, start by placing the hex nut onto the pipe.
2. Next, slide the brass ferrule onto the pipe.
3. Then press the fitting onto the end of the pipe.
4. Push the ferrule and nut up against the fitting.
5. Tighten the nut onto the fitting with two wrenches to create a watertight connection.
6. To install a push-connection fitting, simply push it onto the pipe end until it bottoms out. No tools required.
One major advantage of compression fittings over soldering: you can make a compression connection even when there’s still water coming out of the pipe. Soldering, on the other hand, requires that all water be completely drained from the pipe before you can get a proper joint.
Pro Tip: Before tightening a compression fitting, apply a little touch of pipe dope on the ferrule. This helps ensure a reliable watertight seal. Then use two adjustable open-end wrenches—they have no teeth, which means they won’t leave marks on the fitting or nut.
