Atlanta-based designer Yvonne McFadden
Embracing the concepts of simplicity and functionality, Atlanta-based designer Yvonne McFadden has been transforming homes across the Southeast into serene sanctuaries for the past 12 years. We asked Yvonne to tell us about the role that lighting plays in the overall design process, and to share what inspired her lighting design choices in the TOH Cottage at Cloudland Station.
How important is lighting to the overall design of the space?
Very important! It can change the colors in your room and set the mood. There are many different types of lighting to consider: ambient/mood, functional/task, general lighting of the space, and so forth. It's very important that they all work together to create a complete lighting plan.
At what point in the design process should I consider lighting?
After walls and rooms are determined but before the drywall goes up. The electrician needs to know where to put the wiring and outlets for all fixtures.
With so many lighting options available, where do I start?
Start with a style and the overall feeling that you are trying to achieve.
How important is it to keep lighting styles consistent with the style of the home? If I live in a traditional home should I stick with traditional lights?
Not necessarily. You can create a great juxtaposition by pairing a traditional home with lighting that is a little more modern. You want it to be cohesive throughout. If you choose to introduce something different, I would have pops of it throughout the home so that it does not look like a random element.
We noticed that you chose bronze for the majority of the lighting throughout the TOH Cottage at Cloudland Station. How important is it to keep to the same finish vs. mixing them?
It's okay to mix finishes, as long as you stay consistent in spaces that are connected to one another. Don't mix polished and brushed finishes in the same room. Bronze is a great neutral that can be paired with many finishes.
What were the top considerations you were looking to achieve with respect to selecting the right lighting for the Cottage at Cloudland Station?
Starting with the exterior, the lighting was selected to be cohesive with the charm of the Craftsman-style architecture. We mixed this style with exterior ceiling fans that have a modernized look while also having the artisan feel that the cottage exudes. This mix sets the tone for the style of the lighting in the house. We needed the main living areas to have an updated rustic feel. The bronze finish played a huge role and allowed us to pull in more contemporary fixtures.
How did the lighting assortment available from Lamps Plus help you achieve your goals when designing the Cloudland Station Cottage?
Lamps Plus has a huge variety of styles and finishes from so many great designers. It gave us a wide variety to choose from.
Is there a specific lighting piece that you selected from Lamps Plus for this project that you are really excited about featuring? If so, what is it and why?
We all love the Albin 4-light, 20-inch-wide, bronze metal chandelier for the upstairs open landing area. It is a geometric fixture that plays off the angles in the space. The bronze finish gave us the rustic feel we wanted while the shape reads as a more contemporary fixture. It's perfect!
