TXU Energy offers reliable service, energy plan variety, and high-quality customer support backed by over 20 years of experience. The provider started serving Texas in 2002 and is now owned by Vistra Corp., a Fortune 500 energy company. TXU serves over 1.7 million Texans across deregulated cities such as Dallas, Houston and Corpus Christi.
You can choose from a wide variety of energy plan types to find a rate that fits your needs. TXU scored a nearly perfect 4.9 out of 5 in our review, making it one of the best energy companies in Texas. It earned perfect scores for both customer service and retention.
That said, TXU charges a premium for its service. Its cheapest advertised rate as of May 2025 is 15.5 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), and that rate only applies at 2,000 kWh per month. Most of its other plans advertise rates well above 18 cents per kWh.
In our February 2025 survey of 1,600 Texans living in deregulated areas, only 38% of TXU customers said they were paying a fair rate, which is 20% lower than the average of other providers we reviewed.
Despite its high rates, over 50% of respondents said they plan on sticking with TXU once their contract expires. It may be pricy, but TXU is a strong option if you’re looking for a trusted brand.
Our Take on TXU Energy
TXU Energy is one of the most established energy providers in Texas. It’s been around since before the state began deregulation, operating as the utility company in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area prior to 2002.
TXU Energy has strong customer retention, shown through the 5 out of 5 rating in that category. Overall, TXU Energy earned a 4.9 out of 5 stars in our review, which uses firsthand customer data from our February 2025 customer survey. Its score ties for the highest in our review and is well above the 4.5 out of 5 average for other providers.
The provider also scored a high rating for customer service and online experience, making it a reliable option for homeowners who want reliable support and easy account management.
While providers like Gexa Energy may offer lower rates, Gexa only scored a 4.2 out of 5 for customer satisfaction compared to TXU’s 4.7 out of 5. The gap suggests that TXU customers value the experience, with 38% of respondents saying they pay a fair rate for their energy.
TXU Energy is best for those who prioritize energy plan variety and a provider you can count on to help you. It’s for Texans who value quality service over the cheapest rate.

TXU Energy Plans
TXU Energy offers over 15 fixed and variable-rate energy plans in Texas. Each plan includes a contract term of 12, 24 or 36 months. TXU also offers a variable-rate month-to-month plan. TXU’s plan variety includes time-of-use discounts, solar buyback and fixed-rate plans.
It also offers bill credits, seasonal discounts and tiered rates with usage-based discounts.
For example, the Clear Deal 12 offers a cheaper rate when you use below 1,200 kWh per month, and the Saver’s Discount gives you a 50% cheaper rate when you use between 1,200 kWh and 2,000 kWh. These rate structures can help you save, but only if your usage closely matches the requirements for the discount. Fail to qualify, and you may pay a significantly higher rate per kilowatt-hour.
For more straightforward budgeting, we generally recommend choosing a simple fixed-rate plan for predictable bills. TXU’s Simple Rate 12 is just that. You enjoy the same rate regardless of your energy use for the length of your contract. Plus, you get excellent customer service backed by one of the biggest names in the deregulated market.

Green Energy Options
TXU Energy offers several renewable energy options to meet your goals. Some plans are 25% renewable, while others offset 100% of your usage. You can find the exact percentage in your plan’s electricity facts label (EFL). The Free Nights & Solar Days 12 offsets your usage with 100% renewable energy and gives you free electricity from 8 p.m. to 4:59 a.m. This plan could work well if you typically use most energy at night.
The provider also has a Solar Club subscription that lets you support solar generation without having to install panels on your roof. TXU offsets the first 500 kWh of your daytime energy usage each month with solar energy credits, and you have a steady fixed rate. The TXU Solar Club is membership-based and can help lower your carbon footprint.
TXU Energy Plan and Pricing Structure
TXU Energy’s pricing depends on which plan you choose. Some options have tiered pricing or bill credits when your usage falls within a certain range, while others have time-of-use rates, with discounts during off-peak hours and high rates during peak hours.
For example, the Saver’s Discount plan is a tiered-rate plan that charges a lower rate when you use between 1,200 and 2,000 kWh. However, you’ll pay a higher energy charge if your usage falls below 1,200 kWh or rises above 2,000 kWh.
Other TXU Energy plans have fixed rates, where you pay the same price per kilowatt-hour no matter how much energy you use. These plans might have a higher rate per kilowatt-hour, but they offer more peace of mind and predictable bills.
No matter your plan, your transmission and distribution utility (TDU) passes delivery and maintenance fees to you. The cost is usually included in the average rates. However, TXU is one of a handful of electricity providers that don’t itemize the actual delivery fees in the EFL.
We still recommend reviewing this document to understand your plan and how pricing works. Here’s an example for the Simple Rate 12 plan by usage level.
Usage | Rate (Cents per kWh) | Monthly Bill |
---|---|---|
500 kWh | 20.1 | $100.50 |
1,000 kWh | 18.6 | $186 |
2,000 kWh | 17.9 | $358 |
Below, you can see the EFL for the Simple Rate 12 plan, including the “Average Price per kWh,” the “Base Charge” and the “Energy Charge.” TXU Energy’s EFL includes a section with the “TDU Delivery Charges,” but it doesn’t actually spell out those costs. While this is allowed, we prefer when providers are transparent with all energy fees, including utility delivery charges.

The company has an impressive 4.7 out of 5-star rating on Google Reviews from over 9,000 customers.
“Maria O. was very patient and understanding. She answered all my questions and took care of my issues right away. I am not normally a fan of the online app for chatting, but this time I was proved wrong. It was quite refreshing not to be pressured into looking at anything other than my issue at hand. She was respectful and polite,” said Christina J.
Not all feedback was positive, though. A few reviews share frustrations about expensive energy bills.
“My bill usually averaged $150 a month, which I found no fault with. I have used their services for two years. I got stationed at another army base, so I put my house on the market since I had to move. I was extremely shocked when I got a bill for $533.67 for a vacant, empty house,” said Damion C.

How To Sign Up for TXU Energy
Enrolling in a TXU Energy plan takes just a few minutes online or over the phone. You can start by entering your ZIP code on the provider’s website or using a marketplace such as Home Energy Club.
