squeaky floors

We bought a "fixer upper" last year. We pulled the carpet up in several rooms. Before i put new carpet down, I want to quiet the floors. House was built in 1972. It looks like it has plywood and then floor underlayment (MDF) nailed on top. I used deck screws to tighten down the underlayment, but did not solve the whole issue. If I pull up the underlayment and roll out roofing paper then put back down and screw in, do you think that will solve it? Any other fixes for this issue?

Not likely. How will roofing paper solve the noise?

Instead, first try longer screws.

If the floor still squeaks, try to find out the source of the squeak. Does it feel soft where the squeaks are? If it does, check the condition of the joists, by lifting the plywood as well. This is the only way to be certain.

What could be wrong with the joists? many things: spacing between joists, dry rot, wetness, termite damage...but you don't know if the joists are covered.

Let us know what you found.

Squeaking is caused by two solids rubbing together under movement. Find the place where movement is happening and that will show you the fix. Felt or rosin paper isolates the solid materials from each other, but if the movement is between the joists and the subfloor it will not fix it.

In isolated spots I've cured joist-to-subfloor squeaks by going underneath and wedging them apart just enough to inject urethane glue in the gap, letting it sit a few minutes, then removing the wedge and screwing tight from above. You could do a whole floor this way I guess but it would be a lot of effort and jumping back and forth, so if the whole subfloor isn't glued it's usually easier to pull it all up and do it right.
