(Slightly) Burnt Trim and Railings
jennb

I'm working on restoring the trim in my home, which has been covered in paint for years. I'm in the middle of stripping it off the stairs, and have discovered that some of the railing shows evidence from a fire that happened years ago. The wood is slightly discoloured, but otherwise sound. Does anyone have any tips for lightening the wood before the stain goes on?

I can't seem to add the photo, whether on the post or as an attachment.

Thanks,
Jennifer

You have to remove scorched areas by scraping or sanding down to fresh wood.

I would replace the trim.
